Dealing in the first place with buildings already
under construction I have to explain that the excess of $4,500 on
the original estimate for the Sanitary Inspectors Office in the
Western District is due to Lore extensive accommodation being re-
-quired than was originally anticipated. In accordance with the
27748 approval communicated in your telegram of 7th. September I have
included $100,000 for the erection of Quarters for Subordinate
Officers. Plans for these quarters are now in course of prepara-
-tion and will be forwarded as soon as they are available. In

informed you that I was inserting in these Estimates a sun of
£100,000 for a Wireless Station and that I would await your
decision as to what the power of the installation should be. Con-
-sequent upon the increase in the Survey Staff approved in your
telegram of 20th. August it has been found necessary to provide
for the staff some additional accommodation of a temporary
character which is estimated to cost $2,300. I have included a sum
of $4,700 for an extension of the Stables adjoining No. 1 Police
Station, increased accommodation for the stabling of bullocks
having been rendered necessary by the decision, which is referred
to under the Sanitary Department Estimates, to carry out depart- -mentally the scavenging of the City and Hill District on the
expiration of the present contract at the end of this year. For
the increases on the original estimated for the Underground Trough
Closets in D'Aguilar Street and near the Fire Brigade Station I
would refer you to my remarks to the Council. A sum of $10,800
has been inserted for additional accomodation of this nature
which is so essential to the health of the community.
Communications.
The principal item under Hongkong Roads and Streets is one of $15,000 for the commencement of a road from Victoria Gap to High West Cap which is estimated to cost $40,000 and which
will open up some good building sites along the northern slopes of
